Have you noticed that a lot of couples seem to have babies in the summer and fall? In fact, according to the CDC’s birth rate by month data, July through October tend to be the most popular birth months, with August being the most common/popular month for births.
And if we do a little math, that means December is the most common/popular month for conceptions. It makes sense. It’s cold out. It’s holiday time. You make a lot of romantic fires and everyone is in a festive mood. It just seems like the right time to try and make a baby.
But here’s what a lot of couples don’t know about conception: While it may be a lot of fun, it’s not as easy as film and TV make it out to be. In fact, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services, after 1 year of having unprotected sex, 15% of couples are unable to conceive. After 2 years, 10% of couples still have not had a successful pregnancy.
Many people assume the problem lies with the female, but 1/3 of all infertility cases are based on male reproductive issues. And this is often because a man’s testicles won’t make enough sperm, or his sperm aren’t strong enough swimmers to get the job done.
So now I’m going to share with you three sex positions that have helped couples get pregnant. Some doctors speculate these positions work because they help deposit sperm as close to the woman’s cervix as possible.
If you’ve been unlucky conceiving so far, try these positions:
Granted, it’s not the most exciting position, but it can help a man thrust deeper and ejaculate right near the cervix.
This position allows for even deeper penetration than missionary. It’s also a bit more flexible because the woman can be laying down, on all fours, half on the bed, half off, etc.
You’ll both need to be in very good shape to pull this position off safely, but if you can, go for it! If the woman can be in a handstand position, with the man holding her and thrusting in a downward position, gravity will help get the sperm where it needs to go.
And speaking of sperm, if you’ve been told your sperm aren’t healthy, there are some nutrients you should focus on eating.
Eat These for Super Healthy Sperm
If you’re trying to get pregnant then it’s important you pay more attention to the health of your sperm.
How do you know if you have healthy sperm? Well, healthy sperm have a few things going for them:
1) There are a LOT of them. You want as many sperm in your semen as possible.
2) Your sperm are a healthy size and shape.
3) They’re excellent swimmers. Sperm have to be like trout to basically swim upstream, through the woman’s cervix, through her uterus and up into her fallopian tubes where they will meet the egg and fertilize it.
If you’ve had a checkup with your doctor and he or she has told you that your sperm are few and weak, then I HIGHLY recommend you eat more of the following nutrients:
Getting enough zinc is essential for male fertility, so eat plenty of red meat, poultry, oysters and shellfish.
Both men and women need to supplement with folate to ensure they can make healthy babies. Eat your green leafy vegetables like spinach and romaine lettuce.
B-12 has been shown to increase sperm count and sperm motility (how they swim). Again, eat plenty of fish and seafood, meats and poultry, especially liver. Just DO IT!
Linked with increased testosterone and helping sperm become good swimmers, vitamin D is in foods like cheese, beef liver, eggs, yogurt and mushrooms.
Vitamin E has also been shown to increase the number of sperm in your semen. It’s a numbers game – the more sperm, the more chance you have that one of them will make it to the finish line. Eat nuts and seeds and green veggies like broccoli and spinach.
