Many of us spend our teenage years trying to hide the obvious fact that we have acne. We use all kinds of scrubs and creams with usually little to no success of getting rid of those zits. But acne as a teenager, while not appreciated or enjoyable, is expected for most of us.
What’s not expected is to still be dealing with acne as an adult! How many of us over the age of 25 have woken up with a zit or two and wondered, “What the he–?!”
Adult acne is more common than you may realize. Here are some of the reasons you may still be getting acne as an adult:
- Your Hormones are Out of Whack
Chances are your hormones have calmed down since you were back in puberty, but they will still fluctuate from time to time. This is especially true for women during their menstrual cycle. It’s common for women, right before their cycle when they have more male androgens floating around their bloodstream, to develop cystic acne on their chin, neck and back.
Cortisol is another hormone that can wreak havoc on the skin. When we are stressed, our bodies make more cortisol as part of the “fight or flight” response. This is why a lot of us tend to breakout when we are under a lot of stress.
- Air Pollution
If you live in the country, this may not affect you as much. But if you live in a polluted city environment, your face can be covered in a lot of gross “stuff.” If you have ever taken a toner pad to your face at the end of the day and it’s covered with really dark stuff, this is why. This pollution can clog your pores and the result is you may develop acne.
If you’re someone that has a big sweet tooth, understand that all of that sugar not only affects your waistline but also your complexion. Sugar spikes insulin, another hormone, and insulin elevates oil-triggering male hormones like testosterone. This, in turn, causes the development of acne.
Try to eliminate as much refined sugar from your diet for your skin and overall health.
Overwashing is a thing and you may be doing it. When we wash our faces TOO MUCH, it actually causes our skin to produce more oil. Also, while gently exfoliating is okay once in a while, doing so too much or too roughly can damage your skin. And, as a general rule, anything that rubs or damages the skin will promote acne.
If we’re honest, most of us are on our phones more than we should be. But that smartphone you can’t live without? It’s subjected to a plethora of bacteria every day from being exposed to various environments and surfaces. Then all of that bacteria winds up on your face, and the rest is adult acne history.
It’s a good idea to wipe your phone with an alcohol wipe every once in a while and consider wearing an earphone/mic combo so you don’t have to hold the phone up to your skin.
While this isn’t an exhaustive list of reasons for adult acne, these are the most common. So do your best to tackle these and see if your skin improves.
Here’s something else you can do to prevent adult acne: Take supplements that support your overall health.
Our Golden Royal Honey contains ingredients that have been scientifically proven to support our health and well-being. One of the ingredients is a substance called royal jelly, which is made by nurse bees and fed to larva and the queen bee.
Royal jelly has been shown to help the body balance hormones, particularly for women during their period or menopause.
Our honey also contains ginseng. Ginseng is a powerful tonic for the skin for two reasons: The first is, ginseng significantly increases circulation, and increased circulation is great for the skin, helping to give it that youthful glow. Secondly, ginseng helps calm people struggling with stress and anxiety. And remember, stress causes our bodies to make a lot of cortisol, a hormone that can cause adult acne.
So, if you suffer from adult acne and want to stop getting those embarrassing zits, stop overwashing your face, cut out sugar, use headphones when speaking in your phone, and balance your hormones and beat stress by eating Golden Royal Honey!
