The holidays are just around the corner, and that means many of us will begin eating far more calories than we burn on a daily basis. Can you blame us? Who can say no to the various decadent holiday pies, cookies and sweet treats!
If, come the first of the year, you find yourself shocked at the 10-pound weight gain, you have one of two options: make a resolution to go the gym at least five times a week…
Learn some metabolism hacks that will help you burn that fat off easily.
Yep, the second option sounds better to us as well. So here you go, some easy ways to boost your metabolism and drop that holiday weight:
Eat More Protein
Muscle requires more calories to maintain than fat. Therefor the more muscle you have on your body, the more calories you will burn, even while at complete rest. This is one of the reasons young people seem to have wonderful metabolisms and can eat whatever they want.
But as we age, we begin to lose muscle mass, and therefor our metabolism takes a hit.
To build more lean muscle, you’ve got to eat more protein. It’s that simple. Most people aren’t eating nearly enough. Active women age 50 and over should aim for roughly 50 – 75 grams of protein per day. An active man of the same age should aim for between 65 and 80 grams per day.
A bonus about eating more protein is that it tends to keep you fuller longer, so you won’t snack on high-caloric foods throughout the day.
Try High-Intensity Interval Training Exercises
You probably think that to rev up your metabolism and burn fat, you’ve got to focus on hours of cardio, right? Nope, not even close. By far the best exercises to boost that metabolism and burn fat are high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercises. This type of exercise involves quick and very intense bursts of activity.
Here’s what a HIIT workout may look like. You’re on the treadmill and you spend five minutes just warming up. Then, you begin your HIIT cycles, so you walk for one minute then turn up the speed and sprint as fast as you can for one minute. Repeat this walk, sprint, walk, sprint cycle for a total of 15-20 minutes, then cool down.
Drink Green Tea or Oolong Tea
Both green tea and oolong tea have been shown in studies to increase metabolism by 4-5%. Consider replacing your regular coffee or tea consumption with one of these metabolism-boosting teas. And certainly, if you’re someone who drinks a lot of sugary sodas, you’ll want to quit those and drink these instead.
Catch Those Zzzzzzs
Did you know that insomnia is linked to an increased risk of obesity? Sleep deprivation has been shown to have a negative impact on a person’s metabolism, so it’s important to make sure you get adequate sleep each night. For most people, that is 7-8 hours of sleep a night.
