Where Did My Libido Go?


You know that Daft Punk song, “Get Lucky?” The one part goes like this:

She’s up all night to the sun
I’m up all night to get some
She’s up all night for good fun

This pretty much sums up what it’s like to be a guy. For most of us, especially when we’re young, our hope is that everything could potentially lead to sex. That’s just how we’re wired. Once we hit 14 our hormones come flooding in and that’s it, we’re off to the races and pretty much each and every day is focused on one thing and one thing only… S.E.X.

Fellas, you know what I’m talking about. While our ladies may get headaches and sometimes not be in the mood, that is something that just does not compute with us. “Not… in the… mood… what do these words mean all together like this?”

That’s why when something happens to us and we suddenly are the ones who find ourselves (GULP) not in the mood, our identity is almost shattered. We don’t know ourselves without our libido. Our libido is such a (literally) driving force in our lives, that when it suddenly goes away, we feel lost and confused.

What Causes a Poor Libido in Men?

A declining sex drive is something that can be expected as we age. While it’s fairly common for an 18-year-old to be able to achieve orgasm 4 to 8 times within a 24-hour period, a 30-year-old man may be happy if he can have sex once a day and a 50-year old man may only get in the mood a few times a month.

Scientists are not quite sure what happens in the male body exactly. Some doctors think it is a decrease in our testosterone levels, but so far there isn’t clear evidence that T-level and horniness are really linked. Others think it may be that, as we age, our sensitivity to testosterone and other sex hormones may waver.

To make matters worse, none of us really want to talk about it when it happens. A low sex drive is emasculating, and so we keep our problem to ourselves. But some doctors think more men than ever are experiencing a waning sex drive. In fact, in America it is estimated that between 20% to 25% of adult males are affected by low libido.

What Can Guys Do?

Why do more and more men, even young ones, seem to be losing their libido? Since it’s a modern problem, we’ve got to look at some modern causes. One of the first that comes to mind is our diets.

Guys, our ancestors at meat and some fruits and veggies, not pizza 5-times a week and gallons of soda. Or worse, soy! No man should be eating soy – period. If your diet consists mostly of fast food or processed food, this can cause issues with your overall health, sexual health included.

Many guys, especially young men, are drinking more and more alcohol these days. Maybe it’s from boredom. Our ancestors were either trying to conquer or not be conquered by others. There was always a battle to be fought. But now, meh, we watch sports on TV instead and drown our inability to express our masculinity (which no one likes any more) in our beer.

We also have to talk about stress. Men are experiencing a lot of stress today. Not only is there the stress of getting an education and paying off student loans or finding a good job that will support your family, many men are suffering from the growing criticism from women. We can’t deny that there seems to be a lot of anger being thrown at men, ALL men, whether we’re the good guys or not. All of this criticism and hostility is definitely going to affect whether we feel good about ourselves or feel like getting close to a woman in an intimate way. If so many modern women now see men as weak and inferior, or worse, a threat, well, it’s not a real turn on.

So what can we do?

  • Eat right. You’ve got to clean up your diet and eat whole foods like our ancestors ate. Eat a fair amount of protein, and forget so many carbs. Get your fuel from healthy fats instead.
  • Stop drinking so much. If you’re bored and frustrated from that boredom, take a boxing class, learn a new skill, do something that will improve your life and your level of confidence. Drinking just packs on the pounds.
  • Only get involved with women that are going to respect you. Respect is a two-way street, you’ve got to give it to get it. Looks only go so far, so don’t just go for “hotties.” Stick with women who are also fans of men and their masculinity.
