Most women enter the period of life called “menopause” with some fear and uncertainty. They’ve seen many female family members and friends before them deal with unpleasant symptoms associated with menopause. They also know this time of life brings with it some potential increased health risks.
Many women think hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is their only option to get any relief. But is HRT the safest option? Research has now concluded there may be some potential and serious health risks.
Risks of Hormone Replacement Therapy
First of all, what is hormone replacement therapy? These are medications containing female hormones, either estrogen alone (ET therapy), or estrogen combine with progesterone (EPT therapy).
They are meant to replace important hormones that the body no longer makes, or makes at much lower levels. By replacing hormones, the body ceases to exhibit the common and unwanted symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and vaginal dryness and discomfort.
There have been some benefits associated with HRT, namely preventing bone loss and fracture in postmenopausal women. But along with these benefits are associated risks. Risks are dependent on a few different factors, namely age, type of treatment, how long the therapy will last, and prior medical history.
According to the Mayo Clinic website, in the largest clinical trial to date, a combination estrogen-progestin pill (Prempro) increased the risk of certain serious conditions, including:
- Heart disease
- Blood clots
- Breast cancer
Royal Honey – A Safer Alternative
In light of these risks, some health advocates have been looking for other means to relieve the not only the physical symptoms of menopause but also to prevent the potential post-menopausal effects. It turns out, Royal Jelly may be what the doctor ordered, or should be ordering instead.
One recent study found that by consuming just 150mg of Royal Jelly each day for 3 months, HDL (good cholesterol) increases while LDL (the bad stuff) significantly decreases. The study also found that Royal Jelly has the potential to reduce post-menopausal associated dyslipidemia which is thought to contribute to the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
Supplementation of Royal Jelly has also been shown to improve anxiety and depression associated with menopause in as little as 3 months. Fatigue, another common and undesirable symptom of menopause, has also been shown to be relived through Royal Jelly supplementation.
While the verdict is still out on whether Royal Jelly can alleviate some of the other common symptoms of menopause, namely those hot flashes and decreased libido, these studies indicate that this delicious bee product may alleviate at least some of the more distressing symptoms of menopause.
